First Reading, SRO

by Jon Katz
First reading, a hit
First reading, a hit

My daughter Emma’s first reading was a major hit, dog and baseball people crowding into the Red Fox Bookstore in Glens Falls to fill the house and hear my daughter Emma read from her book “90 percent of the game is half mental,” and talk about baseball with some diehard fans and baseball bloggers. She talked about the new Yankee Stadium, being a woman interviewing scores of nude men in locker rooms (that was the part of the book she wrote about), and the impact of statistics on the game.

I read from my new novel “Rose In A Storm,” and  we both talked baseball and dogs. A great night, for me and for Emma. I have to say I remember my first signing, in a bookstore in Manhattan,  and there were five people there, including two bookstore employees. Emma was funny, poised, and sold a bunch of books. We went out and did some drinking at the Queensbury Hotel with Naftali and Susan, good friends and owners of the bookstore. Several baseball bloggers including Ray from Metphistopheles, a popular Met blog, showed up to cheer Emma on.

Before the signing, Emma and Maria and I went out to dinner in Glens Falls and we went over the things we both would read. I thought Em might be nervous, but she was not a bit ill at ease, and I was impressed, not that I am impartial.  Good readings are hard to pull off. The crowd was into it, and she got a lot of good questions. I read from “Rose In A Storm,” and for once, I liked what I was reading.

She worked hard on her book and it is getting great reviews. People are loving it. Readings are important. There is little to compare with the experience of a writer facing an audience after years of working on a book. It was a great night in a great bookstore with a talented young writer on the rise. One of the very special evenings of my life.

Today’s lineup of Bedlam Dogs. Where’s Frieda?

Izzy, Pearl, Lenore and Rose

Sweet Pearl has returned to Bedlam Farm with my daughter Emma, with whom she lives happily in Brooklyn. She slipped right into life her, grabbing Lenore’s bones and treats. Even Rose was happy to see her, showering her with licks. Frieda was not happy to see her, and is spending the days with Maria in the Studio Barn. She is coming with us the reading at Red Fox Books tonight in Glens Falls.

The Spring Notecards

by Jon Katz
Notecards: Up on Redux soon
Notecards: Up on Redux soon

Hey, a couple of days ago I said the Spring notecards were printed and up on Redux. I misspoke. The cards are printed and available but will be going up on the site for viewing this weekend or early next week. People are seeking them for Easter, Mother’s Day, spring. My mistake. I am pretty happy with them. We’ve got chickens, eggs and flowers. Sorry.
