Inside Bedlam Corners

by Jon Katz
Inside Bedlam Corners

I went over to the Bedlam Corners store today to take photos of the roof work, and because of the snow, the workers had just left. I walked through the damaged part of the store building today, and the impact of a fire on people’s home and business struck me. One of those things you ride by and hear about all the time, but standing and walking around, the devastation of it hit home. Glad the town is coming together to get Marie her home and business back. Fund: Marie Mulligan, c/o Glens Falls National Bank, Salem, N.Y., 12865.

Snow falling

Snow starting

It’s started snowing in Bedlam, and I was wondering what the difference is between a snowstorm and snow. I suspect I’m about to find out.  Going to take a walk with Lenore up the hill. I watched the storm advance on my Ipad. So far, I’m not impressed.  I’m thinking about Spring, though and the Library tour beginning in less than three weeks.

Communing with donkeys

Communing with donkeys

Every morning, Maria and I go out and feed the donkeys. They gather around her, and the three of them exchange something, affection, grounding, I’m not sure. It is one of my favorite things, to see this. Because of Maria, the donkeys are staying, and I cannot imagine her living without them. They all bring out something in each other.

Winter pasture. Waiting for the storm

by Jon Katz
Storm coming

There’s a storm out there somewhere nearby, and different notions about it. A friend called me from New York City in a panic. “Have you heard?” he said. “A storm is coming, more closings and traffic. Are you okay?”

A neighbor called and said: “Great news, a storm is coming. It will be beautiful.” All sorts of says to look at it. Storm Center is alarmed, sending out severe weather alerts all over the place, warning people to stay inside and off the roads and hide.

Schools in NJ report they have to close when there is a storm watch, or people may sue. Drama, drama. I will head out shortly to see if I can run into the storm. I called Ed Rouse and asked him about the weather and no storm is expected there. Everybody looked outside and called it much-ado-about-nothing. I had invited some friends over to dinner, and was going to cancel when I checked the weather online, then I went outside and looked at the sky and I agree with Ed Rouse. Dinner is one. We’ll see.

I love the time before the storm. You can tell if it is going to storm by looking at the donkeys. If they are in the Pole Barn, it will storm shortly. If they are down by the feeder, it will not. They are between the pole barn and the feeder.
