Video: Sheep Head Back To Vermont

by Jon Katz
Sheep head back to Vermont

Any farm is a series of cycles, of life and death and coming and going. The book tour starts next week, so we wanted the sheep back to Vermont before then, and they are leaving this weekend. Rose rounded them up, got them into the barn, culled two who are going tomorrow and kept the groups apart. Simon brayed, and we found Minnie’s secret napping spot by accident.

Come and see Rose working calmly and efficiently. Darryl Kuehne and his wife Pam will be back in the morning. It is nice having the sheep here, nice working with Rose, and nice to see them go. Sheep just elude me somehow, although Maria loves seeing them up in the pasture.  I do not consider them pets, do not give them names. I think when you name an animal, that’s a big turning point. I do not love all animals, and  I do not love them equally. But I take good care of those in my care. It’s a good arrangement with Darryl. They eat my grass, give my dog work, help Darryl save on hay. It works and I hope to do it next year.

My Life, My Wife

by Jon Katz
My Life. My Wife

When these things intrude on my life or consciousness, I think of one thing – my wife, my life, perhaps the same thing. And the shadows recede, and the darkness lifts, and the world is full of light and love and beauty. It is always here, if you look for it

Daily Egg On A Farm Bucket. Saturday

by Jon Katz
Daily Egg On A Water Bucket

I think the key to the Daily Egg is color and simplicity. This photo of the egg on a water bucket was the last one I took, and the best, I think. I’m quieting down for the weekend, for the book tour, which looms like a great ocean liner heading my way. Can’t wait to get out there, can’t wait for it to be over. Three different reporters have broken down crying while interviewing me when they think about their dogs. It will be interesting.

Simon joins the Bedlam Marketing Team

Simon has been promoted to the Bedlam Farm Marketing Team, joining seasoned pros like Izzy and Lenore, and soon, Frieda. Simon was happy to pose with Maria’s newest streaming fiber pillow titled “The Possibilities Are Endless,” to be shown and put up for sale at the Pig Barn Art Gallery, Bedlam Farm, Columbus Day Weekend, October 8-9, ll to 4. In challenging times, we all have to pay our own way.

Simon and Lenore are official greeters, I will be signing copies of “Going Home” which can be purchased at your local bookstore or at nearby Gardenworks and Battenkill Books in Salem, N.Y.

Maria has assembled the works of 9 functional artists – functional art that is reasonably priced, ranging from pottery to jewelry to fiberworks, paintings, felting, striking pincushions  and new memory boxes. Artist reception is from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, in the restored Pig Barn, one of the farm’s prettiest barns. Details on Maria’s website.
