Bedlam Farm Morning. Loss And Gain

by Jon Katz
Bedlam Farm Morning

Some things,

I will never have again in my life.

This view.

The tall windows in the farmhouse living room.

A path through the deep woods.

A ghost on the path.

A hill behind my house.

My front yard: the green, lush hills in Spring.

Some things I will have that I have not had before.

Grain painted wood.

A dinner bell on the roof.

A white porcelain sink in the kitchen,

A cold storage room in the basement.

A bedroom in a woodshed.

A barn fallen down,

A home we made together.

Neighbors to sit on a porch with.

A dog named Red.

A pony named Rocky.

There is always loss,

and always gain.

Isn’t life a trade, silly man,

after all?

You never lose your life,

you just keep adding to it.
