Me and George

by Jon Katz
The Way We Were

Maria and I visited with Phyllis Wynn and Mitch Friedlin at the Park Slope Gallery in Brooklyn on Monday. They have represented George Forss for some time and are working hard to see that the work of this genius is remembered and shown. George and I have become good friends. I am going to visit him in the hospital this afternoon, bring him some books and show him the photographs I took in New York.

I don’t exactly know why, but these photos were exciting for me, different. If you spend a couple of hours looking at George’s brilliant work in New York City, it is very humbling and does stir up some awe and wonder. I am drawn to the same kind of photos that George was, for many reasons I do not understand. And digital photography is not like the kind of photography he does. I am conscious of bring in the presence of a brilliant artist and we just seem to get one another.

I hope he is well and will get out of the hospital soon. I’ll sneak him in a forbidden muffin.
