The Dog Run

by Jon Katz
The Dog Run

Another element of our new home has been finished, the dog run, located between the house and the sheep pasture. Solid fences and wire to keep the dogs away from the road, and plenty of space for them to sit outside and run around. When the sheep are not in their pasture, the dogs can also run around there. Red will love staring at the sheep all day, we will have to see if Frieda goes crazy with all of the trucks. There are woods and paths behind the house and across the road to walk the dogs, so it will be a good spot for them, although not as pristine and isolated as their path in the woods. I will miss that path.

We move our sheep to the new farm Sunday. Our pasture is infected with the foot fungus that causes footrot and we are treating the sheep with antibiotics in the barn and moving them directly into the new pasture.

Radiant Child: Reading To Red

by Jon Katz
Reading To Red

I have to say it stirred this writer’s heart to see Taylor reading my new children’s book “Lenore Finds A Friend,” to Red. She was explaining Lenore to him, and Red always astonishes me, you would surely think he was listening to every word. Maybe he is, it would not surprise me. A beautiful thing to see on so many levels. Photo album of Taylor’s day on Facebook tonight.

Radiant Child: Taylor

by Jon Katz
Radiant Child: Taylor

Every once in awhile, a radiant child enters my life, walks in front of my camera, brightens my life. The farrier Ken Norman’s child Nikolene, the Bedlam Farm Barn Princess was such a child, and now the New Bedlam Farm has its own radiant child, a child allowed to live in the world, taught to be free, growing up around work, not fear, encouraged to take some risks, live her own life. This child radiates a powerful spirit, a strong sense of love and her own charisma. I watched her today, watching her father Todd Mason hammer posts into the ground, amusing herself, attaching herself to Red instantly, and Red back to her. She spent the day with Todd and his wife Gina, and his helper Tim and in the golden sunshine, sitting with Red, her spirit just poured through and reminded me of the spirit inside of me that wants to live freely, and that reminds us that life is a beautiful thing, not to be wasted in anger or fear. I’ll put up a photo album of Taylor’s day on Facebook this evening.
