Have I Taken My Medicine Today?

by Jon Katz
Taking My Medicine Today?
Taking My Medicine Today?

No, not the insulin, not the pills.

Have I cared for the poor today?

Prayed for peace?

Sat under the apple tree?

Loved a dog?

Let a cat sit in your lap?

Rejected the angry and the hateful?

Taken a photo?

Painted picture?

Written a song,

or sang one?

Started a blog,

Encouraged a loved one?

Or a friend?

Have you taken your medicine?

If you have not taken your medicine,

every day,

then how can I listen to your heartaches

about life?

Come Bye. Herding, Every Day.

by Jon Katz
Come Bye. Every Day.
Come Bye. Every Day.

Red and I herd the sheep every day, rain or shine. We work in the side pasture, and we practice outruns, directional commands, I keep Red fit and focused. It has become a sacred ritual for me, a way of grounding myself, connecting with Red, learning patience and precision, focusing my dog training skills. It is a great gift to have Red, and to have sheep, it would be an awful waste not to use them, and I am very blessed to make this work a daily part of my life on the farm, and with Red. He is a remarkable dog.

Leaving Pearl. Here For A Month

by Jon Katz
Here For A Month
Here For A Month

Pearl, the champion yellow Lab who was my dog and then went to Brooklyn to live with my daughter Emma four years ago, is back at  Bedlam Farm for a month. Emma will be traveling with her boyfriend Jay Jaffe and she’ll come back for Pearl in mid-September. Emma adores Pearl and it was a heartfelt parting. Pearl is a great dog, it will be fun to have her around for awhile, she is getting up there but Emma has taken great care of her. So will we.
