Dealing With Exhaustion

by Jon Katz
Exhaustion
Exhaustion

I went out in the back yard and sat with Red for awhile tonight, I realized this week that I am exhausted. I have not slept well this week for various reasons, and I am up to my neck in interesting stuff – the blog, lambing, the carriage horses, my new book, my new publisher, my photos, Maria’s trip to Gee’s Bend and the very intense life of the farm. I’ve been to New York five times this year and finished the Simon book, am done writing my new e-book “Who Speaks For The Carriage Horses?” and need to start my next one. Yikes. And the next Bedlam Farm Open House is but a month away.

I’m just wiped out and I don’t see much rest down the road, I have a lot to do, my life is full and challenging and exciting right now, I want to experience every minute of it. I am not into down time. I have so much to write, say and do I am just not sure there are enough hours and days for me to do it. I am going to meditate for longer periods, read more, have more quiet hours at night, take more walks. I am going to see an orthopedic surgeon to see if I must finally get my foot fixed. I was 17 when the first orthopedic surgeon told me I needed surgery on it, and that was a long time ago.

But it might be time to mess with it a bit, I love to walk and never want to give it up. And I am going to work at resting this weekend. I’m going to blog and take photos as usual, and start thinking about how to start my “Talking To Animals” project. Maybe we’ll start work on our expanded Dahlia garden, we have been receiving lots of new bulbs.

The Good Mother: Some Concerns

The Good Mother: Some Worries
The Good Mother: Some Worries

Ma is a good mother, gentle and attentive and very patient. I was a bit concerned today that the lambs are not a bit fatter. Ma is still expressing plenty of milk, but I think she’s tired and she did have a rough time. I’m going to get some supplemental milk in the morning – perhaps goat’s milk – and we’ll supplement their diet a bit.

This is not a crisis, and I am not seeking advice or assistance. I just want to see the bellies a little bigger after a week. Most twin lambs progress more slowly than singles, they have to work a little harder for their milk. I’d like to see Ma put on a few pounds as well, we are supplementing her diet as well.  Otherwise, they all look good. A vet is coming to check on the ewes and the lambs, and band Jake, so we’ll get everyone checked out again.

The Lives Of Women: Garment District

by Jon Katz
Garment District
Garment District

This photo – we were walking through the garment district made me see once more time how much more complicated the lives of women are than men. The fashion thing is not comprehensible to me, women are made so conscious of what they are wearing and whether it is in fashion. Twenty years ago I decided to wear chinos, blue jeans and blue shirts every day of my life, and that has worked out for me.

I do love this window, thought, I imagined the women having a meeting, sharing their lives and stories, working hard to crack the Big Apple.

Information Desk, Second Floor, MOMA, New York City

Photography is teaching me to listen to my impulses and follow them. We were walking through a second floor gallery at the Museum Of Modern Art in New York and I saw this perfect gentlemen standing by the information desk. He seemed a gentle and wise man to me, and I asked him if I could take his photograph. “Why?,” he asked. “Because I think Robert Frank would have taken your photo.” He nodded and said certainly. Frank’s work is often shown in MOMA. There was something about this image that makes me love it, I can’t really tell you what it is.
