Lambs In The Light. Are White Animals Sacred?

by Jon Katz
Lambs In The Light
Lambs In The Light

I believe thes two lambs were born in the light, they always see to find it. They are not like the other lambs I have seen, they are somehow different. I can’t say how, there is a calmness and simplicity about them, my friend Chief Avrol Looking Horse of the Sioux Nation says that white animals are sacred in the Native-American culture. Perhaps there is something to that.

Poem: I Don’t Care To Live A Small Life

by Jon Katz
Thunderstorns
Thunderstorns

I don’t care to live a small life.

I have just come from my Adirondack

chair, waiting outside,

for the thunderstorm

which has painted the sky a rich and angry blue,

the wind kissing me with its silver mouth,

all the way across the sky.

Listen to me, open your heart,

open your eyes, open your hands

offer your soul in sacrifice to the clouds.

Pay attention every single day,

to what your heart whispers,

that you

really wish to do.

I don’t care to live a small life,

of regrets.

“Maria.” Story Of A Photo. Framing By George Forss

by Jon Katz
Maria: Frame By George Forss
Maria: Frame By George Forss

I took this photo of Maria – one of my favorite photographs of her – to George Forss and he framed it for me in his framing studio, the sun room on the second floor, he has to dodge the laundry hanging overhead. I asked him to put it in the window so I could photograph it there. I love this photo of her walking in the wind, the sheep walking alongside her, it is like a Willa Cather novel, it captures her sense of isolation, her connection to animals and her love of nature.

We hung the photo over the fireplace mantel in the living room. I am happy to see it there.

Summer Barn and X-Men

by Jon Katz

Summer Barn

Summer barn, White Creek, New York. We went to see the new X-Men movie in 3-D, we liked it a lot – the former girlfriend loved it –  there was plenty of head-banging across the universe and zillions of dollars of special effects, but the movie had spirited acting, a plot you had to give some thought to, and some heart and soul. It was a lot of fun.

I’ve invited George Forss to go with me Monday to see “Godzilla,” and he said “I am sorry to say yes!” George, whose whole life is a special effect, can not resist one. Monday morning, we are going to watch the Memorial Day Parade in Cambridge with George and Donna.

On Being Alive

by Jon Katz
On Being Alive
On Being Alive

It is somewhat surprising to me that Deb and Jake are alive. Their mother, Ma, was almost euthanized several times, she survived toxemia, infections, labor and birth struggles, uterine infections and fever. They are small lambs, fragile things, we are supplementing their milk from their Mother.

They are here for a number of reasons – lots of decisions, some good, some not, the care of a good vet, the patience of two humans, the willingness and ability to spend some money, a tough and resilient mother, good antibiotics. Fate plays a hand.

I think they are past the danger point, they have a serenity and gentleness about them that is unusual, even for lambs. They are at ease around me, they do not mind the camera at all, quite the opposite. It’s curious how life works, how unpredictable it is. It is almost an accident that these two are alive, yet it seems very right that they are.
