Baby Geese: I Love My Little Farm

by Jon Katz

This morning, a pair of geese marched out of the march with four babies in town, as soon as we put the fence up to protect the area from over-grazing, the geese figured out it would be a good and safe home for them and their babies. It was fun to see them marching around out there.

I love my little farm, it is just 17 acres outside of Cambridge, N.Y. but I love everything about it.  I love the daily chores, the fussing over firewood and hay, the lives of the animals, our interactions with them. I love our old farmhouse, and the gardens Maria is planting all over the grounds.

I love our love together, we were each beaming this morning at the sight of the baby geese waddling around, as if we had a thing to do with it. I loved when the pony checks my pockets for treats and when Red moves the sheep, and when Fate runs circles around them.

I love to see the barn cats magically appearing and disappearing, in and out of the barns and gardens, and I love Maria working away so happily in our studio.

It is a small place really, and I am no farmer. I am a writer with farm and there is a big difference. But is our place, our world and we love taking care of it, fixing it up, bringing it back to vibrant life, learning about our animals and their mystical and wonderful way.s

Sometimes I shake my head and wonder how I got here, but then I just smile and give thanks that I did. Out to mow before it gets too hot.
