Empowering Women: Everyday Tote-Bags From The Young Women Of Kolkata. For Sale.

by Jon Katz

Maria is returning to human form with this compelling and important video offering ten extraordinary tote-bags for sale. They were made by the young women of Kolkata, all  orphans  rescued by the Interlink Foundation from a life of risk – prostitution, sex-trafficking, even being sold.

Maria went to Kolkata bring packs of magic markers and showed them how to use them to make this lovely, unique and empowering art. The proceeds from these tote-bags – they cost  $50 plus shipping – will go right back to these women in Kolkata. Maria explains in the video how she will soon also be selling 100 of the potholders she taught some other women in India to make.

Maria will be continuing her own work, but also helping these young fiber artists learn how to make theirs and sell them. That can make all of the difference for them.

Maria is getting back on her feet, after a grueling trip and some days of rest and re-connection. She is herself again, as you can see.

There is something very personal and touching about these bags. They are eco-friendly, the bags are strong and well made and each reflects something of the spirit of the women, mostly children, who made them.

You can see each tote-bag her as well as Maria’s description of how they were made. If you want one, you can e-mail her at [email protected] or visit her website. They are for sale now, but there are only ten.
