Behold, A Watermelon Grows In The Pasture (More Than One)

by Jon Katz
A Watermelon Grow

We were quite shocked to see a dozen watermelons growing a patch right next to the hay feeder in the pasture. At first, we thought they were pumpkins, but it is pretty clear now that they are watermelons. Last year we fed some watermelon rinds to the donkeys, and this is the area where they stand and drop manure,   the area around the feeder is certainly well fertilized.

Some lucky seeds landed in a good place.

The heavy rains have been good for plants and vegetables and we have at least a dozen watermelons out there, the animals did the seeding for us. On a farm, there is something surprising and affirming to see every day. Nature is a powerful force, it will fight to save itself from the greed and thoughtfulness of human beings.

And we will have a lot of watermelons to eat and give away.
