Sylvie’s New Year: “I Am So Grateful For My New Friends…”

by Jon Katz
Sylvie’s Thanks

I saw Sylvie today at our New Year’s Pizza And Lunch celebrationj (more later), and she took me aside to tell me how grateful she is for the new friends she has made through the many letters she receives from the Army of Good.

I often see her reading these letters and I often see her replying to them. They mean a great deal to her. Sylvie is a devout follower of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, she is also an enthusiastic letter writer and has come to  value her “new friends.” They mean a great deal to her.

Sylvie means a great deal to me. She talks sometimes about the two great loves of her life, she lost both of them to mental illness.  She often suffers from a feeling of coldness, this has been true all of her life. We are working to help her with robes, slippers, wool caps, sweaters and long underwear, and it is helping her.

I have a strong connection to Sylvie, somehow, we just get each other. Sylvie is strong-willed and clear-headed, she speaks her mind.

I am grateful to those of you who write her regularly, it is hard to describe how much this has brightened her days and engaged her very busy mind. Thanks. You can write to Sylvie c/o The Mansion, 11 S. Union Avenue, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816.
