Rose holding the sheep while Lenore forages

July 7, 2008 – It was hot and the sheep were anxious to get back in the shade. This is a bit tricky because I walk to the gate to let them back in the main pasture, and if they get anxious, then can right right over me, so I tell Rose to “hold them” and she does, and I am always astonished at how this little dog can keep 27 sheep right in place until I tell her to release them. Rose is my role model for work.

Flower, afternoon sun: Dog Days coming

Posted At: Monday, July 7, 2008 9:58 PM | Posted By: Jon Katz

July 7, 2008 – The Dog Days begin this week, and run through August. The dog days are sacred days on this farm. I was pleased with this photo, as it required planning, patience, and a bit of luck.
It took about a half hour to get this shot, because I had to use a tripod and set up the camera in the very hot afternoon sun and then wait for the sun to get just behind this flower. I have no idea what kind of flower this is. I have some disability which keeps me from learning math or the names of flowers and birds, but I used a 180 mm macro lens with a 65 mm extender, and on manual, aperture f/6.3, shutter speed 1/640. The photo came out well, but the color was a bit flat so I used Aperture to bring up the contrast, highlight the effect of the sun. The rest was luck.
