Good morning from Minnie, in the barn, awaiting Election Day

  I am not a political person and am usually uncomfortable at the anger, self-righteousness, even hatred that seems to infect most political discussions I hear, so I avoid them. Bedlam Farm seems quite far from the political maelstrom, but here’s to a productive and civil Election Day, and the hope it brings a sense of calm and direction, whoever wins. Cable news is, to me, generally a plague on the civic process, and a perversion of the very idea of an information media. But I write about dogs and rural life and should stick to that. And will. Good luck today, though, whatever you believe.

The beauty in ordinary things: responding to reality

The last leaves are beginning to disintegrate and offer all kinds of photo opportunities, as light streams through and all around them.

  Thomas Merton: “One of the most important – and the most neglected – elements in the beginnings of the interior life is the ability to respond to reality, to see the value and the beauty in ordinary things, to come alive to the splendor that is all around us in the creatures of God.”

  At night, I sometimes toss a camera and tripod in the truck and sail out into the cold night, looking for neon. I think I found a sweet spot in Molly McGuire’s in Granville, where there are two  TV’s tuned to sports (not election coverage) and a few regulars holding up the barstools. It was quiet in there, and welcoming. I don’t drink much, if at all, but I was at home there. I plan to hang out at Molly McGuire’s on some cold winter nights. Good salads, huge sandwiches. Good neon to shoot.

"Cocktails": Molly McGuire's, Granville, N.Y.

  November 3, 2008 – Started a new tradition last night, hanging out at Molly McGuire’s Restaurant and Tavern in Granville, N.Y., on Main Street. The burgers and sandwiches are good, and the drinks strong, and it was a quiet night, and the proprietor’s didn’t even blink when I hauled out my camera and tripod, and they said sure, take any photos I wanted. I plan to hang out there regularly, and bring the camera. Great neon shot opportunities. It was quiet, and we all thought everybody was home watching election coverage. A good time to be out trawling for photos.
