I think the 135 mm lens has fallen out of favor with many photographers, and I’ve nearly sold mine several times. Once every couple of months I pull it out and use it, and I rarely regret it. It captures colors and depth in a particular way, as it did this fern.

Winston, in the sun

On cool days, Winston stays in the big barn, under the heat lamp. When the sun is out, he comes out for a brief strut, some crowing, and sits on the stoop by the Pig Barn. He always keeps an eye out for some grain or corn, and enjoys both.

November 12, 2008 – Cold, bright moon. The goats were out complaining early this morning, even before I got up. They didn’t like my clothes, my mood, the fact that I wasn’t feed them soon enough or often enough. Wretched goats, I shouted, and they just hooted back.

Friends: Lulu and No. 57

November 12, 2008 – Sometimes animals strike up odd friendships on the farm. Lenore and Brutus, Minnie and Winston, Winston and my late border collie Orson, Lenore and Mother, well Lenore and anything. Lulu and No. 57, the leader of the ewes, are pals and often hang out together in the pasture. I imagine sometimes they are conferring about the life of the farm, perhaps gossiping about me. Lulu is a sweet and gentle creature, and No. 57 is imperious, one of the few sheep who will butt heads with Rose.
