Ice storm, carriage barn

December 12, 2008 – There isn’t much time for reflection during a snow and ice storm on a farm. Lots to do, little of it pleasant. I did get out for dog walking, photos, and thought about the notion, suggested by others as well as me, that we are not heading for Armageddon, rather for a different kind of economy, and for a new and simpler way of living.
For me this means thinking differently about a lot of things: cars, driving, eating out, plastic bottles, garbage, clothes, credit cards, the kinds of food I eat, the number of animals I have, dog treats,  the channels I need to order on my satellite TV.
This makes sense from an economic perspective, but even more from the notion of purpose in life, and of being forced to think about what a simpler, sounder life means. Do I need to buy dog treats and chewbones or is it just as good to stick some peanut butter into a used bone, freeze it, and give it to the dogs. They seem to like it fine. Comparing nutrition labels, I found the expensive kibble I was buying is identical to several brands in the supermarket which cost much less. I switched.
I pay attention to the groceries I buy, and am pleased that I am wasting little or no food. And I’m discovering generic brands.
I didn’t need or use a premium TV package, so dickered for one with two or three movie channels. I am considering animals, feed, hay bills and other things on the farm.
This kind of change is unpleasant, disturbing and painful to many people. But I share the idea some of my friends have that we are entering a simpler and more spiritual age where we actually have to think about what we buy and use. This will be a good thing. Better late than never, I’m interested.
