Chicken, in the barn. Cold!

December 22, 2008 – Bitter cold. Better tomorrow. Nasty drive from Vermont, icy roads, thick fog. I don’t like icy roads, but they are part of life here. The fog was a surprise and it was slow driving. Christmas week, important. Family and friends. Photos and writing. Reading and thinking, perhaps some mourning for things lost and mistakes made.
Winston, hanging on

December 22, 2008 – Winston is hanging on, moving little in the cold, hugging the heat lamp. Annie and I bring him water, corn and grain, but I think he is close to the end. I found him lying in a corner of the barn today, not moving and brought him back to the lamp. He has defied the odds before, but he seems to be weakening.

Grapevines, in the snow. And friendship
Posted At: Monday, December 22, 2008 12:41 PM | Posted By: Jon Katz

December 22 2008 – I think friendship has to feel good to be good. Enduring friendships feel comfortable, healthy, unpressured. A friend doesn’t presume intimacy, or make you feel intruded upon, doesn’t assume things but asks, anticipates something you might need and tries to support it. A friend is encouraging, feels supportive. A friend is someone to call when you feel good and when you don’t. News doesn’t happen until you tell a friend. Then it becomes real.
Friendships require work, communication, commitment. When they are taken for granted or when problems go unresolved, they can wither easily. Men to not, in my experience, value friendshp as much as women do. They feel friends are something you sandwich in between work and responsibility. I am fighting for friendship. I want good friends.
