News from the sheep

Good news from Darryl Kuehne’s farm in Vermont. Two of my ewes – No. 17 and 89 – have given birth to lambs, twins and a single wether. I was pleased to hear it, and sad it didn’t happen here.
But it is best for them to be settled in their new home, and Darryl the ram did a good job. Maria and I are going to see them this weekend.
Need to be more daring

Carriage barn, after the rain
July 30, 2009 – Going to Saratoga to bet on a horse called “Awesome Maria,” running in the 7th race. Long shot, but should be in the running. I woke up this morning and asked myself if I am being daring enough, creative enough in my photography. The answer is not, not lately. I am going to expand my horizons, try different shots, think differenty, go for more people.

Is the name of a horse running in the seventh race at Saratoga, (thanks for the tip, SD). I think I need to be there.
For Rose, changes

July 30, 2009 – For humans, change is inevitable, an integral part of life. I imagine it’s more confusing for dogs, even though they are famously adaptable. I took Rose out the pasture this morning and she looked for the sheep, and seemed to grasp that they are not thre. Rose has a map in her head of how the farm works, and she is constantly adjusting it. We went to a neighbor’s farm and she herded sheep for a bit.
Then she chased her slingshot ball, ran after a frisbee. Later we will go for an ATV run, which she loves above all things. Like Frieda, and surely Izzy, Rose is very adaptable. She will have a new tradition, and as long as she has focused work to do, she will adjust. So will I. Dogs are not inferior to us, but the working breeds live in our service, and the nature of our work changes.
