One of my farmscapes (not in the calendar)

The Agricultural Stewardship Association (ASA) is now offering its 2010 photo calendar – with photos from Corinna Aldrich and me -  for sale online with a credit card, through its website.
You can also call the ASA at 518 692-7285. The ASA has preserved thousands of acres of precious farmland from develop, and the beautiful and useful calendar will raise funds only for that purpose. It’s a great calendar and a good cause. There are shots of Bedlam Farm and my farmscapes and some of the animals from here, and also Corinna’s lovely shots of rural and farm life.
The new link makes it simple to buy the calendar online. Needless to say, an inexpensive, useful and beautiful Xmas gift. Living here in Washington County, N.Y., I see every day the urgency of preserving farmland from fast-enroaching development.

and supporting it in the ways great working dogs always do.

Chasing Sunrise with Lenore

Sunrise, the Studio Barn

In the evenings, I often chase sunsets with Izzy. In the mornings, I chase sunsets with Lenore. Both love the work,
and watch me in puzzlement and fascination. Lenore seems to know when I am happy with a photo. She gets up and is ready to move on. Until then, she sits silently watching me. It’s curious to see what dogs do and don’t know.

Living in Faith

Thomas Merton wrote that one cannot live without faith, and I think that is true. I understand now that I will never quite come to terms with the specific nature of faith. Most religious faith is a bit too rigid for me, most of the time, but you take photos in the woods most mornings, it’s also difficult to not believe God is whispering to you sometimes.
I have faith in telling my story, and in confronting the truth about my life. I have faith in the power of love, and in the hard work that goes into the making of a meaningful or creative life. There is nothing worth doing in my experience that is not difficult, without some risk or challenge. People who cross the terrain of fear and take those risks can find great rewards, as well as much terror and confusion. People are either mythically driven or security driven, as Joseph Campbell wrote. I am mythically driven, and will perhaps never have the security I so often crave.
Sometimes you just have to close your eyes and jump. You have to disregard the limitations, expectations and judgments of other people. As Campbell warned, this can send us plummeting into a dark place, from which we may return whole or broken.
The sadness of life is also it’s joy. Out of pain, growth. Out of change, understanding. Out of risk, reward. Out of darkness, light.
