Meet Polly, the evocative scarecrow

by Jon Katz
Name this scarecrow

So we have a winner in the scarecrow naming contest – Kaaren Andrews – who chose the name “Polly,” a diminutive of Prosperina, the daughter of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture. Sounds right for this creative scarecrow who protects the gardens at the Common Sense Garden Stand on Route 22, Cambridge, N.Y. Kaaren wins a signed copy of “Going Home: Finding Peace When Animals Die,” out September 27. Thanks to the hundreds of you who posted names on Facebook and who e-mailed Maria, who chose the winner this afternoon.

I think it’s a cool name. Thanks Kaaren. I like the contest idea, too, will think of some more. Meanwhile I’m consider buying a new Thunderbolt Display with a Macbook Air computer. For the first time, I can write anywhere, not just at my desk. Should shake things up a bit. No truck, though.  I’ll bring the Common Sense people the name tomorrow.
