August  12,2007 – Damp, boggy. Firewood was delivered while I was on book tour, and the sight of these cords of wood, ready to be moved into the carriage barn and onto the porch, is one the first and most pronounced signs. of Fall. Autumn is my favorite time of year on the farm, and I’m usually off on book tour and miss it, but this year I’ll be getting home and grateful for that. Thanks to the Saunders. Time to start hauling it around, which will take a month.
 Then, when the firewood is stacked and Danny Thomas makes his final delivery of second cut hay, I’ll be ready for winter, earlier than ever, and with less grief and mayhem. At least so far. It took me only one year to figure out you want the hay stored very close to the animals in winter.
