Joe Donahue’s Brooks Brothers (allegedly) shirt – is it a rodeo shirt?

by Jon Katz

January 2, 2997 – Bitter cold. Worse to come tonight. Went to Albany for radio show. Brought Izzy.  Joe Donahue, my co-host on WAMC’s “Dog Talk” has never been graced with my keen fashion sense, and he is openly envious of how well I dress. I suggested that his shirt, above, had sort of a country square dance motif, and he jeered, saying it was an expensive Brooks Brothers shirt, and denied – somewhat acidly – that it had any country motif at all. It actually seems to me that it is several shirts, somehow patched together. But Joe usually wears his IRS-agent uniform of white shirt and tie, so I guess this is movement. Maybe it was a gift. Anyway I promised to post it, so I did. It seems to me he didn’t have go go to Brooks Brothers for that shirt, but I could be off.

P.S. News. Sarah e-mails me to point out that her father had this same shirt years ago, also from Brooks Brothers. She wondered if perhaps “Brooks Brothers runs out of various flannel patterns and they just throw these “limited edition” flannel imprintings together.” She wasn’t sure if the style was still in vogue, she added, offering that perhaps it was a rodeo motif. Hmm.
