Morning with dogs (in the cold)

by Jon Katz

January 2, 2007 – Bitter cold, sub-zero, high wind. Morning with my dogs. At 2 a.m., the wind began pushing snow off the farmhouse roof, and Rose began freaking, jumping on and off the bed. At 4 a.m. Lenore vomited on the quilt, spewing unimaginable stuff. I got up, cleaned it up, and when she started retching, got her and the other dogs outside for a quick stretch. She came in and at 4:30, vomited again, this time on the carpet. Rose continued to freak out. Izzy,  now spooked by the wind and snow, came on the bed and lay on my head, exciting Lenore, who chewed on his rough.
When I got downstairs, I saw one dog had had an accident by the door. Messy. I cleaned it up. I put a coat on and got all three dogs outside for a brief walk, which I hoped would clear out all of their systems. Then I put all three in crates and went back to sleep. I will take a nap later. Life with dogs is not always like they show it in Disney movies.
