February 7, 2008 – I’m away for a couple of days, and this blog, which I’ve come to love, will get a rest.
This time, these last few months,  has been important for me, a time of challenge, some pain, great change, and oddly, great fulfillment. It was magnificent, in its own strange way. I don’t want a static or secure life, and am not nearly ready for a condo in a warm place. Even in this nasty winter, I wouldn’t have missed a day of this time, nor would I want a life without growth, risk and testing.
  Joseph Campbell says the way to find your myth, is to find your zeal, to find your support, to know what stage of life you are in, and face the reality of it. Wisdom, if it comes at all, comes slowly and gradually, and sometimes, painfully. And it can bring real accomplishment.
   We are all different, each heading out on our own particular road. No two of us are alike, and we each have to find our own way, for all the gurus and experts and therapists telling us what to do. I agree with Campbell: this questing is not an individual ego trip, an indulgence a youthful or mid-life crisis, as many, many people will tell you.
  It is not a crisis at all. It is the opportunity and drama of a lifetime,  about finding life inside, finding what is valuable in ourselves and allowing it the fullest possible expression. This is our elemental right. Noone should take this from us. We are entitled to this, and we owe nothing less to ourselves.
   There is, in fact, nothing more important than being fulfilled. I’m on it.
  “You become a sign,” says Campbell, “you become a signal, transparent to transcendence; in this way, you will find, live, and become a realization of your own personal myth.”
  Everywhere I go, I see people struggling to be fulfilled, to fully realize their own personal story, signs to the world. Some will make it, many will stumble and fall.
   I want to grab them and shout, fulfill yourself, be a signal to the world. But I also know that this is not really a message you can always hear from someone else, another voice in the babbling chorus  –  when all is said and done, you have to do it yourself.
