City On A Hill. Arise From Your Sleep!

City On A Hill

“Awake from your slumber! Arise from your sleep!

A new day is dawning for all those who weep

The people in darkness have conquered the night.

May our tears be turned into dancing,

For the Lord our light and our love has turned the night into day.”

There is something to be said for getting older, for doing something thousands of times, for experience and perspective. I started taking photos on Kinney Road five years ago, and have been taking photos of Kinney Road every since, and I was looking for something every time, but last night, I very nearly found it. I brought the right lens – a 16-35 mm – and came at the right time – a half hour before sunset, when the sun was almost level with the truck in the sky – and got the right subject – I’ve had my eye on this truck for several years, but never caught it when the light was right, or when it was pointed in the right direction – and in the right place – Kinney Road, a farm. The truck is filled with purpose, the scene filled with emotion.

On Kinney Road, I am filled with emotion, and perhaps that counts also. And every step across the field – I came further out than ever before – I was thinking of St. Augustine, and his beautiful call to life. A new day is dawning for those who weep. The people in darkness have conquered the night. He could write. I thought of his city on a hill, and wondered if, just for a moment, I was there.
