Everyone’s Life Is Harder Than Mine: Fear Less, Love More.

by Jon Katz
Harder Lives

Henry David Thoreau came to understand a basic truth about philosophy, perspective and human existence. Whenever he came to feel afraid, or sorry for himself, or began to complain, he told himself this: everyone’s life is harder than mine. The losses, tragedies and setbacks he suffered did not mean he could see his life as difficult, tragic or filled with lament.

He reminded himself that everyone had a harder life than he did. Everyone suffered loss, lost friends, parents, pets, suffered disappointments, got sick. This gave him perspective, kept him grounded, staved off fear and pity. I accept this idea and think about it often. Whenever I am sad, fearful, upset. Everyone’s life is harder than mine. A seminal spiritual idea I think. All over New York City I saw signs that said “Fear less. Love more.” Great and timely slogan.
