Donkey Dinner: Mysterious Rituals

by Jon Katz

Donkey Dinner

The donkeys are mysterious, they live by their own rituals and signals. One day they eat at their feeder, the next they like the sheep feeder. Donkeys love to do whatever is not expected of them, whatever you don’t want them to do, everything has to be their own idea, they don’t really care what your ideas are. We have learned to roll with this, if they want to chase the sheep away today and switch feeders it’s fine, go ahead with it.

Pool At The Bog

Pool Tables At The Blog

I love going to places with pool tables, there is something timeless about them, I was happy to get permission to take some photos of these kids playing, the Bog is the perfect place to hole up with friends during an ice storm. We keep finding connections in our town, places, things we are drawn to.

The Bog

The Bog

We stopped at a bar/restaurant near us called “The Bog,” before the photo reception,  it has a great reputation for hamburgers, the bar is popular, especially during an ice storm. I’ve wanted to take some photos there for awhile, tonight it just felt right.

A Sweet And Stormy Night

by Jon Katz
A sweet and stormy night
A sweet and stormy night

George and I had a sweet and stormy night Thursday at our photo show reception at the Round House Cafe. There was an ice and snow storm that arrived around dusk, and a lot of people wisely stayed home, some good and loving friends turned out for some wine and cheese and crackers and to help us celebrate the show. George and I talked a bit and we showed some videos of BBC, Today Show and Entertainment Tonight pieces about George and his work in New York City.

I am not a big fan of art shows, this one was so comfortable and intimate and warm, it was a sweet night for the both of us. This winter is tenacious, it seems to be one stream of winter that just doesn’t break or end. But the cafe was a bright place last night, it meant a lot to me, and I think, to George. We are fortunate to have a place like the Round House to appreciate our work, people said the nicest things about my pictures, and George was his charming and charismatic self. Most of the people who came knew him but some got a closer look at his wonderful creative history, and learned more about his amazing life.

I have to say I am touched by the feeling people have for my photos there as well, it is something new and different for me, my photography grows as an important part of my life. Next week I go to New York to pick up my new camera, another chapter in my photography. My friendship with George has enriched my life, I was very proud to share my photos with his on a sweet and stormy night in my town.

We Did It: Kickstarting With George (Maria, Too). Happy News.

Kickstarting

We did, we finished George’s $10,000 Kickstarter Project “The Way We Were,” and submitted it for approval. I expect it will be accepted and be up online next week. I also learned that Maria’s Kickstarter Project, “Reclaiming Vintage Hankies,” has been accepted by Kickstarter and will go up on the site tomorrow morning. Maria is seeking $4,000 in pledges for a new sewing machine and some funds to reclaim and “re-purpose” the vintage hankies she has been using for scarves and other things.

It took George and I four days and his home-made computer equipment definitely made the project exciting. Off to the photo reception this evening, an exciting day around here. We got the firewood into the shed with the help of our friend Jack Macmillan – Maria hauled wood for  hours – and have shoveled paths to the pasture and around the house. Snow and ice tonight, the excitement does not end.
