Poem: Making People Nervous

by Jon Katz
Making People Nervous
Making People Nervous

Listen to me, my friends,

I can tell you that I make people nervous,

I always have, even in the crib.

I was not like the other children,

and am not like the other grownups either,

I used to ache to be inside the tent,

looking out,

and now I am at peace outside the tent,

looking in.

I live inside of my head,

and learned just a little while ago

that while I make some people nervous,

other people love me, just for who I am

Isn’t that a thing to wonder about?

All through the stairway of existence,

I thought I could never get in,

and then I found that what was was in,

was really outside with me all of the time.

Does this make sense to you,

I wonder?

There are people who need to love,

because love is simply the greatest creation

of God and the universe.

But then, people who love,

make people nervous.
