New From Robin: “Angry Face, Happy Face.”

by Jon Katz
Robin’s Angry Face

Robin has a new face, Emma calls it her “angry face.” It’s actually a new kind of game, a joke Robin dreamed up in between bouts of great preciousness.

Robin makes her “angry face,” and when an adult says “what’s  wrong?,” she cracks up and shows her happy face.

I think this kid might be a nightmare in a few years, but it will be fun to watch and I think we will be good friends. There is a lot of spirit in there. I didn’t think of anything like that until I was in my 60’s.

Happy Face

I was supposed to go and see Robin this weekend, but was defeated by the cost of things, cancelled trains,  clogged streets, misplaced airbnb’s, and outrageously priced hotels. I feel bad about New York City, I lived there several times, and have always loved it.

Sometimes, I think it just defeats me now.

I have a friend who is barricaded in one of the last rent controlled apartments in Manhattan, his landlord is trying to drive him out, doing everything but releasing rats into the kitchen, and he thinks that is next.

The only things in Manhattan now, he says, are foreign millionaires, hedge fund managers,  hordes of tourists, pissed off Yellow cabbies and Uber and Lyft drivers. I love New York, I always called it the Emerald City, I don’t want to dislike it.

But it is changing more rapidly than even I am, and we are just rushing past one another.

it is not a simple thing to go there.  I’d like to see Robin soon – rumors are she’s coming in July – and show her some of my faces. I don’t have the best happy face, but I have a great angry face, just ask Maria.

  1. What a remarkable little girl! There’s a quick intelligence in her expression and spontanious joy. Her smile seemed to say to me: “I fooled you!”
