Video: Back At It, Scraping The Bedroom Wallpaper

by Jon Katz

We are back at my wife’s latest farmhouse restoration project, our bedroom. So far, we have three walls scraped. I am the official Sprayer, Maria is the champion Scraper, although I do as much of that as I can after I’m done spraying.

My formula is simple, I take some Downy water softener and put it in a plastic water spraying jug with hot water. We score the wallpaper first, I spray it thoroughly, and then we give it 15 minutes to soften.

Then I come back with a refilled jug and spray and spray and spray. Sometimes I have to come back three or four times, we don’t scrape if the wallpaper refuses to come along.

Too easy to damage the plaster.

You don’t force the paper off, you spray it until you can pull large chunks out without damaging the old walls. Maria is incredibly happy and excited to be doing this work, she loves it, even though many dread it.

It is the perfect work for two obsessives in love to do together. You can see her video here.

  1. The perfect winter project. Boring, obsessive and a great feeling of accomplishment when it is finished. Can’t wait to see Maria’s final color choice.
