Red’s Relapse, Minnie’s Rescue

by Jon Katz

Red suffered a relapse at the Mansion yesterday, he kept dropping to the floor and seemed to have lost much of the moment in his legs, as happened about a month ago. I had to carry him out to the car and lift him into the seat.

I called the vet and Dr. Fariello and I agreed to put Red back on an anti-inflammatory and get absolute rest for the next few days at least. You may recall that Red was paralyzed by what we think was a piece of fractured spine caused by his arthritis and spinal injury from being stomped by Chloe our pony.

He couldn’t walk at all that first time, his condition is not quite that bad. He is eating and moving slowly about in the house. He only goes outside to eliminate.

This doesn’t seem as serious as the first episode but is serious enough. He’s on an absolute rest program for the weekend at least, we’ll reasses then. He’s eating well an able to stand up, but very slowly and with great care. I hope history repeats itself.

A severe wind came up this afternoon, it’s blowing stuff all over the farm. We couldn’t find Minnie for hours until we figured out she was way up in the wood shed, she could get up there in the wind but was afraid to come down. We got a ladder out in the barn and got her down and into the basement with Flo. The wind makes the air bitterly cold tonight.

  1. Of course, I have never met Red but from your photos and videos of him he looks to be a “perfect” dog (if there is such a thing). Jon, I think you have been very blessed having Red and I wish you and him all the best in his recovery. He is a wonderful, wonderful dog who certainly also found an incredible master!

  2. It brought tears to my eyes seeing Red’s photo, and learning he has had a relapse. I went right over to shower my 9 1/2 year old black lab with hugs and kisses. Her recovery from surgery for a detached Achille’s tendon has taken over 6 months, but she is doing well. Best wishes to Red. What a great dog.

  3. Saying prayers for you and Red and all the critters. You are an incredible human being. Keep all those critters warm and snuggly.
