Red’s Own Secret Service

by Jon Katz

Red has his own Secret Service detail when we go out in the morning to let him be with the sheep. As most of you know, Red has a serious spinal injury and has suffered some paralysis. It is not curable and will one day most likely result in his not being able to move without pain. Obviously, I will not let him suffer, if it comes to that.

He is also losing sight rapidly, and the sheep know it, and have gotten rebellious. Bud has stepped into the fray – he adores Red – positions himself between Red and the sheep. If any of the sheep even look at Red in a belligerent way, But gets right in their face.

If they are eating and leaving Red alone, Bud will wander off to sniff around the march. Otherwise, he is on duty.

I realize that Bud thinks he’s the size of a dinosaur, but I can’t imagine what the sheep are thinking. Dogs are amazing to me, they humble me all the time, I wonder at all of the people who tell me what their dogs are thinking. I have no idea.

It is a remarkable thing to watch, though, not something I have ever seen.

  1. It’s pretty amazing that Bud does all of this with Red and the sheep..but I guess he is a terrier and perhaps mixed with a little “wanna be Border”..he is traditionally marked after all..
