Working Dog: Red Takes Bishop Maginn By Storm

by Jon Katz

The problem with taking Red places is that you can’t just bring him once, you betterĀ  bring him every time you come. Red, for all of his sight and hearing and back problems, comes to life when a bunch of children want to love him up a bit.

He loves attention, he feeds on it, and is a fast-acting cure for kids who are frightened of dogs. In the refugee community, dogs can mean danger, there is a lot of fear around them.

I talked to the class about therapy dog and Red’s training.

Red has already flipped a number of Bishop Maginn students, he was mobbed by the art class today. I’ve offered to teach a writing class to any interested refugee students wanting to tell their stories. They have some amazing stories to tell. I could come in once a week for six weeks or so, I’ll be coming to the school regularly anyway. Maybe six to ten students.

I’d love to do it if they want me.

I want to soak up the loving energy in the school – I call it the Love School – and help Bishop Maginn to continue its wonderful work with refugee students.

They need some help, they are getting some. Thanks once more to the Army Of Good.
