The Bedlam Farm Manure Initiative

by Jon Katz

We have a huge pile of donkey and sheep manure. We’ve invited our friends to come over and take what they want for their gardens – it’s seasoned stuff – and most of the have. We’ve taken some of it for our own gardens, our flowers and vegetables love it.

Now, Maria has launched the Bedlam Farm Manure Initiative. Every day, we fill a wheelbarrow with manure and then we take it out to one of the pastures and spread it out. Hopefully, we will nourish the pasture and the soil

She shovels it into the wheelbarrow, I push the wheelbarrow behind her and we take turns spreading it around the pasture. We’re aiming for one wheelbarrow a day.

We’ll ask our friend Vince to come back with his tractor in September and spread whatever is left.

  1. That’s an inspiration. I have a pile of goat poop that is larger in mass than all their bodies combined in just one year cleaning out their pens. They also spread it all over as they graze. They are poop machines working hard to convert grass into fertilizer. I consider it value added from the goats. I milk them and make cheese as well.
