Zinnia’s First Meal: Three Weeks Old…

by Jon Katz

Lenore Severni, our breeder from Stonewall Farms Labradors, send me this photo tonight, this is the first regular food Garnet’s new puppies have eaten, they are just about three weeks old, five more weeks to go before they can go to their new homes.

I had a battle today with Sue Silverstein at Bishop Maginn High School, where Zinnia will spend some time being socialized. Sue wants to buy a pink collar with rhinestones for Zinnia, and when I told her I didn’t like my working dogs to wear pink (I thought of Rose), she gave me a hard time.

Maria sided with her, of course, saying pink was a strong and appropriate color for women. I just don’t like it for working dogs, I take the work seriously. It seems frivolous to me. But I’m catching heat.

The puppies are so small, it’s difficult for me to spot Zinnia or quite imagine her. That will change. It’s good of Lenore to send me these photos and videos.

  1. Go for a deep rose or deep pink that isn’t as blatantly pink. Look online you can get just about any color via Etsy. I resist giving you advice but thought this might help as a compromise. Good luck!

  2. PINK! PINK! PINK! PINK! PINK! PINK! PINK! PINK! PINK! PINK! PINK! PINK! PINK! PINK! PINK! PINK! PINK! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  3. I wonder what cultural forces have made pink seen frivolous to you. (And as a horrible aside it has seemed that way to me too) I have never been a pink person but as of this moment I am claiming it. There is no natural reason pink shouldn’t represent strength, resilience, hard work, and power. In fact … I think it does.

  4. I hear strong men wear pink!! if that is the case, get on board, wear a pink shirt to match the pink collar..drop the rhine stones..unless you want to be a cowboy with a cowdog..lol

  5. I say, perhaps a camo color for the hunting dog in her. You know they have pink camo. No rhinestones!!!!! She could have several collars- the pink camo one could be worn for therapy and going out- aka her “Sunday” collar. Her everyday collar might be a beautiful horse-harness leather. That would look classy. But, as you know, and we all know- she is YOUR dog and what you say goes!!!!! I’m with you, Jon.
