Shut Down

by Jon Katz

I’m a big believer in rebirth and renewal, and I’m about to get some. I’m writing this on Maria’s laptop. The blog is shot down for a bit, hopefully not more than a day or so.

My computer finally crashed and everyone I trust and love in the world is telling me that I’m exhausted and need to take it easy for a couple of days.

Maria and my friend Sue Silverstein both tell me I run around like a fiend and don’t know how to stop or rest.

This shocks me, as I think I’m not really doing nearly enough.

So I’m listening, and I am sorry that I beat my wonderful computer nearly to death with my photo migrations, blog posts, photo storage issues, and new operating systems.

My computer crashed today, it was ugly and scary and I rushed it over to a licensed Apple repair place nearby. I’m not sure if the computer is ever coming back.

My data is backed up, of course, but it too is in some danger. Data, unlike dogs and people, can always be replaced. We have too much of it hanging around.

Life goes on. Tomorrow, the car goes into the shop for servicing, Monday I have another round of eye surgery, Tuesday we pick up Zinnia in Connecticut.

I’ll be gone Monday and Tuesday, and probably out of service tomorrow. If need be, I’ll buy a new computer. Our worlds are complex and draining sometimes, but I believe in rebirth and renewal.

I have to be honest, I feel frayed and weary, now that I think of it.

I’ve decided to take Christie Decker’s acting class again in late November. Zinnia is invited, Christine was a great fan of Red. I don’t wish to act, but I learned a lot about myself in the last class, and I want to learn more, as grim as that can be.

I will, of course, get it all back together, hopefully better and more creative. I’m grateful we sold out the Bishop Maginn Wish List so quickly, a lot of kids will be warmer tonight because of your generosity and compassion. Big boxes are arriving from Amazon and elsewhere.

Thanks for hanging in there with me. I’ll be back as soon as I can. Life without my blog is gray.
