Bedlam Farm: A Politics Free Zone

by Jon Katz

I’ve decided to declare Bedlamfarm.com, my blog a politics-free zone, at least for now, and hopefully, for good. No bloviating pundits, no nasty cultists from the left or the right, no politicians, no social media rants and rages.

There are plenty of places to go if you care about politics if you wish to be angry if you are worried or concerned. I think this need not be one of them. But I also want to be clear.

This is not a Pollyanna place, only for cute animal photos or pretty flowers.

There is plenty of life here, and disappointment, hope, and death, joy and sorrow. We don’t hide from life or run from it,  but there ought to be places where people can go and find a respite from anger, bigotry, hate, argument, and disappointment.

I’d love for this to be that place. This week, I hope to start stirring up some good, at the Mansion (I want to buy scrubs for the aides) and Bishop Maginn High School, whose refugee students need just about everything.)

If you wish to contribute to this work – this is how I deal with politics, I just do good – you can do so via Paypal, [email protected] and by check, Jon Katz, Mansion/Refugee Fund, P.O. Box 205, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816.

This blog is my memoir, a story of my life, good and bad. There will be cute photos of animals, especially dogs and donkeys, and color and light too, as the days lengthen.

There will be stories of people struggling for dignity and comfort at the edge of life, and brave young refugee children working hard to put their lives together. Zinnia is emerging as a full-blown therapy dog, that will also be a focus here.

I am grateful to the people following my blog, and to the people making our small acts of kindness possible. We have done a ton of good, and this year, we will certainly be needed.

Doing good feels good, much better than arguing about what good is. Thanks for being here.

  1. With this declaration, you are further carving out a niche. You know that life is more than what is depicted online: the news, the controversies, and the furor. The life we encounter daily is not to be found there. So, you are giving us a glimpse into yours. And kudos to you.

  2. Politically I have committed to being ‘engaged but not enraged’. And a big part of that is blogs like yours that feed my soul & make me think. Then I feel more equipped to enter the ring back into advocating for what I care about in the political realm without anger or rancor.
