Takedown: Let’s Here It For The Small Dogs

by Jon Katz

Bud is a Boston Terrier, officially a small dog, but like most Boston Terriers, his self-image is strong: he thinks he is the canine version of the Tyrannosaurus Rex, bowing to now creature.

I got this shot this morning of him taking Zinnia down and rolling her over on her back, something that should be impossible for him but is not.

Zinnia is a large dog, but she doesn’t seem to know it, and her size as not overtaken her sweetness. Bud and Zinnia wrestle all the time, and I often wonder how Bud will deal with the size difference as Zinnia grows.

The simple answer is that he doesn’t. Attitude overtakes size. When Zinnia gets rambunctious, Bud goes low and takes her down, then runs and hides under the dining room chairs.

Bud seems to know how to exploit Zinnia’s good nature. No matter what he does to her, she doesn’t get angry or quarrelsome, and never aggressive.

Bud has a trick way of grabbing one of her legs and toppling her over, as in the photo. She seems to fall for it every time. Let’s hear it for the Small Dogs, their secret is that they aren’t really all that small.

I think Bud is indestructible.

  1. Jon, I don’t know if this is allowed but I had a dachshund once who used to go up under the big dogs and bit them in the b*lls. Worked every time. Small dogs are smart. Love your pictures of the dogs playing. Your pictures of the dogs and your encouraging writing helps in these awfully stressful times. I’m so overwhelmed by the media coverage of Covid-19, just listening to it lowers my immune system. So, I don’t. I’m working on a quilt which is mathematically driving me crazy at the moment. Better that that listening to the news.
