The Mansion Mask Project. Art For Good.

by Jon Katz

I learned this week that the Mansion is struggling to procure enough masks for the aides who wear them all through this arduous and long-term lockdown ordered by New York State.

I was asked to help this morning, as the most urgent need for masks during the virus is in hospitals and nursing homes for health care workers.

It is hard to find masks anywhere. I did find some online this morning, I’m now a champion online tracker. I was able to order 150 masks which are arriving next week, I just ordered 50 more.

I told Maria about this and she jumped at the chance to make some more masks for the Mansion, she’s holed up in her studio making 10 masks to drop off this afternoon and she will make more over the weekend. She loves to use her art and her skills for good.

I loved her trial run mask (above) the Mansion aides may soon have some of the classiest masks anywhere.

If any of you have some unused masks, feel free to send them to the Mansion.

I don’t think we need to purchase anymore (I’ve now ordered 200 masks), but there is a two-or-three gap between ordering the masks and their arrival. Even Amazon is getting overwhelmed by the explosion in online shopping and the great need for masks.

If any of you want to make some masks, that would be much appreciated. The address is The Mansion, 11 S. Union Avenue, Cambridge, N.Y, Cambridge, N.Y., 12816.

  1. I have to tell you and Maria how much I enjoyed your podcast. I felt like I was sitting in the same room with you both. The emotions that you both were feeling I am certain were being felt by the rest of us. I enjoyed hearing your laughter so much. You are the new George Burns and Gracie Ellen?

      1. Funny that Marsha mentioned George Burns and his wife Gracie. I have a new Havanese who I named Gracie, after Gracie Allen. I remember their radio and TV shows. At the end of the shows, George always said, “Say good night, Gracie,” And she replied in her funny, almost birdlike voice, “Good night Gracie.” So now, every night, that’s the last thing I say to my Gracie.

  2. Maria’s mask is SO CLASSY and I’m sure much sturdier (and definitely prettier) than any you could order! Way to go, Maria! A seamstress friend made two for me and they are superb in craftsmanship, but definitely not as pretty and artistic as Maria’s. The Mansion aides are so fortunate to get these – and washable too! You guys are awesome. Love you both.
