Kisses To Mom Earth: The Composter Is Here

by Jon Katz

Our new composter came today, another smooch for Mother Earth. Maria put it next to our vegetable garden, which is exploding, and just up the hill from our new solar power system, which has produced 262.21 kilowatts in under a week.

I am eager to get our first bill soon. And my new Hybrid Toyota  Rav 4 is helping out. 41 miles to the gallon, I’ve spent $32 in gas over the past two months.

We are especially conscious of helping the environment this year. We are one family, one small farm. We will do everything we can do help the earth now.

In the summer, we grow much of the food we eat, the solar power is a beautiful step for us, and we are studying compost suggestions and gathering information. No meat, bones, processed chemicals, etc.

We’ll be using the composter starting tonight (we have to clear out some grass, it needs to be on soil.)

This feels good, it’s about time too.

  1. You can also add shredded newspapers and junk mail and to your compost. Grass clippings really help the compost to heat up and decompose. We have been composting for years , only ours is just a fenced in area so we do have critters that visit.

  2. Avoid the work of removing grass at the bottom of the composter. The composter does not need to be on soil, Add leaves, grass clippings, green bits from the vegetable or flower garden. These will decompose the grass at the bottom of the container. A bit of soil is helpful — Every 3-4 months, I throw a trowel or two of soil from my garden into the composter on top of the leaves or whatever. In your case a small bit of manure (chicken, donkey or sheep) might speed things along. If the weather is particularly dry over a month or more, throw in a gallon water. Keeping a combination of green/wet and dry ingredients seems to work best. Enjoy.

  3. Your comment about your Rav 4 reminded me of an amusing question I saw recently saw. “Is anyone else getting 3 weeks to the gallon now?”

  4. I love my composter! We have clay/shale out here so the compost really helps our gardens, especially our vegetable garden! Happy gardening!
