My Dogs Love Their Wood Stoves

by Jon Katz

There is a special satisfaction that comes inside of me from feeding animals and keeping them safe and warm. Fate and Zinnia love tearing through the woods and wading in the swamps, even in the coldest weather.

In the winter, Bud is a Wood Stove kind of dog, he’s had enough of cold and exposure in his life and is very happy to doze right next to the fire.

At the end of the day, Zinnia and Fate are worn out and relish the fire. The three of them gather in a tight circle and just go to sleep. It warms my heart. Fate and Zinnia love being outside in all weather, they never seem to get cold in the woods or the yard.

But most breeds left out in the cold for too long can and do suffer. It makes me feel sweet to see them warm and dry.

They sure don’t mind the stove.

  1. Funny that i walk mornings with a dog from Zinnia’s breeder (in MA). I only know because this dog is so impressive I inquired where she was from & remember you writing where you got Zinnia. Always planning on the next Lab(s)
