Foot Rehab, Light Of A New Lamp

by Jon Katz

Last Thursday, I had some surgery on my left foot. I’m wearing a big blue boot and am not supposed to put any pressure on the foot for another seven days.

I can drive but am not supposed to walk much, and in the afternoon and evening, I keep my foot up in my favorite chair. I write in the morning and at night.

It’s frustrating but good for reading and listening to music.  In this photo, I think I look strange and spooky.

Last week, I ordered a new reading lamp arrived, and this one is quite amazing. It casts a bright and narrow beam on a book or magazine.

I don’t need batteries or recharging on reading lights. I also use it while listening to my new classical music app, Primephonic.

Zinnia, my round-the-clock therapy dog, keeps an eye on me. Maria came in and saw this beam of light and took the photo. I’m on a heavy dose of anti-biotics (doctors get nervous when diabetics get foot injuries). Back to the surgeon next week for a check-up.

My big health care lesson for aging is to be pro-active. I no longer wait too long to get help, although I did this time.

  1. Morning Jon: If you are not aware of her you definitely should read the blog posts of Julie Zickefoose. She is at
juliezickefoose.blogspot.com. She is an author also and a wildlife rehabilitator. Her currant post dated March 8 is about rehabing goldfinches blinded by Mycoplasma. I thought you might enjoy reading of her experiences. She’s also written about working with bats. You can also find her on Facebook.
    Good luck with your foot!
