Harry The Pleco, Algea Sucker Extraordinare

by Jon Katz

There are more than 150 species of Plecos, algae-sucking catfish with sucker-shaped mouths and bony plates and spines over their bodies instead of scales to protect them. They can raise and lower their spines when threatened and will eat almost anything.

Algae can mess up a  tank pretty quickly but Harry does a great job of keeping it under control. I’ve always wanted to get a shot of Harry up close but didn’t manage it until yesterday. He is one of our oldest fish and one of the strangest and most efficient.
