Morning Shadows, A Photo Magazine Experiment

by Jon Katz

I had my photo editing class with Andrew on Lightroom this morning, and we experimented with shadows, hues, and my new obsession, which is the photo magazine shot, one that on rare occasions combines old and new forms and brings some color to black and white and offers the best of both worlds.

I’m excited about this experiment, a new kind of photographic art (for me, others have been working on it).

The process is more complex and demanding than I thought, but well worth it. These lessons are great if they don’t kill me.

I tried this in this morning’s photography by leaving the apple tree alone and bringing color to the bench, the barn, and the hay feeder, drawing attention to the farm’s infrastructure while living its soul intact. That’s the idea.

  1. My attention is drawn to the apple tree’s shadow. It looks like a guy lying there with his head in the trunk of the tree.

  2. Well done.
I’ve told you I like seeing naked trees in the winter.
The snow and shadow draw my attention to the tree.
And the muted colors are perfect.

  3. Thank you for the lesson, Jon. I saw always the beauty of the apple tree in color, but this time it looks like fretwork against the background. Wondrous. There is so much to learn, like Maria’s art in quilting, that needs a larger framework to appreciate. I negotiate for more time to learn. Thank you again. Veronica
