Still Life: Apple Tree And Stream (And Tripod)

by Jon Katz

I don’t need a tripod for all the photos I take, but I see that it does make a difference whenever it is used. I was drawn to this shot of our apple tree in front of a swollen stream that has appeared in the pasture after all the snow. I love the way the camera handled the background (and the foreground).

Since I started experimenting with the settings, I’ve taken more control of the camera, getting more of the pictures that I want.

  1. Phenomenal! So much detail. I know it’s the same tree we have seen time and time again.? But now there are so many more little twigs and branches. Am I crazy for thinking that? It is such fun following you through this learning period. There really IS something to this Leica purchase.

    1. Thanks, Susie, no you are perceptive. with the tripod, the detail and depth of field are so much better. Also, I am using aperture more effectively to shape the light and shadow, thanks to my lessons. This is what I love about the Leica, I am learning how to use it better. The truth is, the tripod and better understanding of aperture are changing the pictures. Thanks for noticing.

The Leica was a bold move for me, but a great one. One day I’ll have the regular camera, perhaps not in this lifetime..
