Begonias For The Garden Beds (Not Dahlia’s)

by Jon Katz

Today, the first steps towards our gardens. Maria and I will both be planting onions, hers in her vegetable garden, me in my raised garden beds.

I wrote yesterday that I was going to be planting a few Dahlia’s in my beds, but a number of readers and Maria reminded me that our Dahlia in our Dahlia garden can be four and five feet tall.

So I’m planting some Begonia bulbs instead, along with a bunch of different flowers, but not for at least another month. I’m also removing the bricks and cardboard that have been covering my beds all winter.

Time for the soil to breathe. The onions will not only give us onions for our stir-frys but I’m told they will help the other flowers be opening up the soil. Onion roots go deep, but they can be planted in March.

So onions will be the first things I plant.
