We Bought And Planted A Historic Iris Today, The Swedish Flavenscens

by Jon Katz

We were at the farmer’s market and we both saw an extraordinarily beautiful and graceful Iris unlike any we’ve seen before. Maria went to buy it, and we brought it home and planted it.

It’s called an old  Swedish Flavenscens.

Its origins go back to the 1700s and the flower didn’t come to the United States until before 1900. The woman who sold it to us said her grandparents had an Iris farm in New Jersey, she first saw the plant there.

Even I could see the grace and beauty of it. It’s now in the garden by the back porch.
