The Jon Watch: The Birds Turn The Table. Next They’ll Have Cameras

by Jon Katz

The birds have turned the tables on me and are smarter than I had imagined.

First thing in the morning, I walk up close with my portrait camera, which is made for people, not animals. The birds and I are getting to know one another; they don’t fly off but increasingly take a look.

They are curious more than frightened and are beginning to associate me with all that food; all creatures pay attention to that.

I’m curious, too.

I expect them to whip out some cameras and snap me and my camera. I love seeing their faces close up; I hope they get as much pleasure from peeping as I do. This is a sweet way to start the morning.
