Here’s hoping for support for the Tampax experiment once again.  It’s that time, Tampax leaves quickly.

I’ve been working with the Cambridge Pantry for several years now, and I’ve yet to find any other Pantry anywhere that offers its families and customers a personal female item like a menstrual item or liners – I’m thinking of Tampax.

Sarah Harrington, the Pantry Director, broke all kinds of boundaries when she decided to offer Tampax and other women’s items in a food Pantry just about the time the Army of Good and I arrived.

No food bank offers personal care items like this, and few other Pantry can afford it or ever did that I know. The Pantaxes in the Pantry shelves tell a great deal about the Pantry that Sarah is putting together.

She asks her customers what they need and tries to get it. Usually, we can help. It’s a wonderful role for the Army to play. It helps in the kindest and most personal way.

I am honored that we made it possible.

I asked her how this happened: Sarah never toots her own horn, but her Pantry is unique and extraordinary, and all at a time when many food pantries are struggling to stay afloat.

She remembers women telling her (Sarah asks them questions) that it was a struggle as food prices rose, and they had to choose between Tampax and pads and the food they wanted to buy for their children.

I met one of the customers in the parking lot. She wanted me to thank the Army of Good for sending these items to the Pantry. “For me,” she said, “it was a miracle.”

It was one of Sarah’s miracles. “Most food pantries focus only on food,” she said. “I was trying to think what a woman would need if she ran out of money. It is a great relief to the women who come here to have that expense covered. They REALLY appreciate it.” Sarah was listening. So was the Army of Good.

I told her I thought that idea was inspired

“The Army of Good made it possible,” she said.
